Recently, as you probably know, here in Atlanta we experienced some flooding. Parts of Atlanta were completely underwater. Unfortunately for many homeowners their homes were damaged by the flooding. SCS was hired to some of the demolition work in one of these homes. The home at the height of the storm had about eighteen inches of water in it. For this project we had to remove 4' of drywall/plaster from the areas where the water reached the eighteen inch maximum and two feet of drywall/plaster from the areas that only got about eight inches of water. We also removed all of the furniture and stored it. The flooring was water damaged and had to be removed as well. Finally, fans and dehumidifies ran in the home untill everything was dry. You can see all of this in the pictures below.
You can also see the importance of maintaining caulking and keeping an eye out for potential problems in your home. You will see in a few pictures a window that had rotted out (the room with the red walls). The homeowners could have seen there was a problem because the window sill was completely black with rot and mould. When we took the tile that was on the wall below the window off all of the supporting framing came down with it. The wood was completely roten out.
Whether it is once a month or once a year it is important to walk around your home and take a quick visual inspection to see if you have any problems. A problem like this probably could have been prevented if the homeowner had seen it soon enough but because it wasn't caught it turned into a major problem.
